Saturn
– All “flat” types of peaches and nectarines are known technically as “Peento” varieties. Peento comes from the original Chinese word for peach, pan tao.
– They are known by many names – some are variety names and some are marketing terms: Saturn, Galaxy, Donut®, are just a few you might be familiar with.
– While white flesh peaches are the most common, white nectarine, yellow peach and yellow nectarine varieties also exist.
– Nothing has been done to “make them flat.” It’s just a naturally occurring trait of these particular varieties.
There's a legend to the history that I read somewhere about them being bred thousands of years ago in China for the Emperor. He loved peaches but didn't like getting juice in his beard. So the royal gardeners developed a peach that could be eaten in just one bite all the way around.
